The City of Calgary was planning to replace the expansion joints of the Ivor Strong Bridge in 2016. This project presented several challenges such as project timelines, environmental restrictions, and logistics, however, the most significant challenge was managing the existing traffic delays during weekday morning and afternoon peak hours. Traffic Solutions, amongst other consulting engineers and contractors, was tasked to mitigate traffic congestion with the use of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and strategic traffic management to address impending lane restrictions and speed limit reductions. The use of ITS improves the safety and mobility of roadways by combining data collection and data analysis to produce a fully automated traffic information to motorists with three major components: sensor, software, and messaging.
